Shane Hurlbut ASC

B&W Portrait Shane HurlbutShane Hurlbut, ASC combines his passion for shooting film with his natural gift of teaching as an in demand keynote speaker. After completing “Terminator:Salvation” directed by McG and starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington for Warner Brothers Pictures, Shane researched and accessorized the Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera to turn it into a movie making machine! Shane designed a helmet mount for the Canon 5D Mark II to shoot 9 webisodes as part of a marketing campaign for “Terminator: Salvation.” The webisodes were produced by Bandito Brothers, Warner Brothers and Wonderland Sound and Vision.  Shane also used the helmet mount for the Canon 5D Mark II for a ride experience video for the “Terminator:Salvation” rollercoaster ride at 6 Flags Magic Mountain starring Moon Bloodgood and Common produced by Bandito Brothers, Halcyon and 6 Flags Corporation. Cheech and Chong’s “Light Up America” was another project where Shane used the Canon 5D Mark II for the Weinstein Company.  Currently, Shane is working on the film, “I Am That Man” directed by Scotty Waugh and Mike McCoy for Bandito Brothers, Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers. He is using a combination of the Canon 5D Mark II and traditional film cameras to capture the unique undercover operations of the Navy Seals.

Keynote Speech: Catch The Wave: How Still Photography Changes The Way We Make Movies

Shane will provide a stimulating, interactive discussion about the Canon 5D Mark II camera and how it changes the way movies are being made. Hurlbut refers to this camera as a “game changer” because of its versatility. Important features include: compact nature of the camera itself, lighter still lenses, image stabilizing ability, and flexibility to accent the action in new ways with increased depth and sharpness. The camera gives a cinematographer the ability to capture shots spontaneously with an unprecedented depth of field. It’s greatest benefit is the small footprint: a compact, lightweight camera that travels easily, grabs stealth shots with amazing resolution, requires a smaller crew, works well with a minimal budget, yet provides unlimited creativity!

Michael will show the new tools and technologies available to help photographers transition to shooting video with hybrid cameras.  The Image Mechanics team will also be leading a live VSC demo shoot in the exhibition concourse theater mid-day Saturday and Sunday with a Canon 5D Mark II on a Redrock Micro kit and a RED ONE camera.
